Cree Wolfspeed Mohawk Valley Plant Selected as 2021 Golden Shovel Project

North Carolina-based CREE Inc. is building a billion-dollar factory near the New York community of Utica. The Mohawk Valley Fab, currently the world’s largest #siliconcarbide device manufacturing facility, was selected for the Golden Shovel Project of the Year Award by Area Development Magazine. The annual Golden Shovel Awards recognize states for their achievements in attracting high-value-added investment projects that will create a significant number of new jobs in their communities.

At Cree, the latest of many semi-conductor projects Jersen Construction Group has played a key role in building, Jersen has formed and placed over 60,000 cubic yards of concrete on site so far. That’s over 6,000 concrete trucks in just over a year! We’ve also performed heave civil work including earth moving, excavations, and underground utilities. We are proud to be part of the team and do our part to push this project towards a successful completion.

According to the article by Area Development Magazine, the silicon carbide wafers to be produced at the Mohawk Valley, N.Y., plant will reduce the charging time and range of EVs and also be used in 5G infrastructure and solar inverters.

Silicon carbide wafers could start moving off the line in early 2022. This particular chip technology is seen as a key to reducing charging time and increasing the range of electric vehicles, and it’s also helpful in everything from 5G infrastructure to solar inverters. As production continues to build over the next several years at the Mohawk Valley plant, the company expects to employ more than 600 people, about half that total as early as 2023. Despite the pandemic, construction moved ahead nicely in 2020 and early 2021, and work began on a pilot production line at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany. The project is getting a boost of as much as half a billion dollars in the form of a state grant if project goals are met.
