$35 million apartment complex approved on Western Avenue in Albany

The planning board voted 5-0 to approve the site plan for GSX Ventures to build 136 apartments and a 1,400-square-foot fitness center at 1211 Western Ave., according to Andy Brick, an attorney for the developer.

A 12,000-square-foot commercial building on the site will be demolished.

Even though the new design has more units, there are 54 fewer beds than the initial proposal because it’s not intended as off-campus housing for students.

Rents haven’t been set, but they will probably range from $1,400 to $2,600. The largest units will be 1,200 square feet.

Jersen Construction of Waterford is the builder. A construction timeline is yet to be determined.

A name hasn’t been selected, but Grant is considering calling the apartments The Hamilton, a nod to Alexander Hamilton’s connection to Albany.
