Herkimer County Correctional Facility
Project Description
SCOPE:
On October 3, 2018, the Legislature passed a resolution awarding contracts for the construction of the New Herkimer County Correctional Facility located at the former P & C Plaza on Route 28.
The new facility is approximately 74,000 square feet made up of three inmate pods, kitchen, medical suite, visiting area and jail administration. The pods will accommodate 130 beds with room for expansion in the future. The facility will be replacing the current jail which holds 29 inmates. On an average day, the County must board out 30-40 inmates to other facilities around the state. This has cost the taxpayers millions of dollars over the year. In building the new structure, the County is expecting to save approximately $700,000 per year in perpetuity.
